The Campus is an exciting new approach for Bristol aimed at raising standards, attracting more learners and offering a better choice of opportunities for young people. The new North Bristol Institute planned for the north of the city will be an integral part of the Campus. The Campus has received enthusiastic support and financial commitment from Ministers and strategic partners alike, and has been welcomed in Bristol as the way forward.
The Portland Square Arts project, which is funded through the Learning and Skills Council West of England (LSC) and the European Social Fund, gives young people the opportunity to have a go at a wide spectrum of arts in an informal learning environment. Google Local Marketing Services They are also given the chance to learn literacy, numeracy and computer skills at Portland Square, which is the arts arm of the Bristol-based training provider, Gordano Training Limited.
Many of the students, who are told about the project by LSC community-based ‘buddies’ and Connexions Personal Advisers, have experienced difficulties with formal learning situations. It is hugely important that young people of all abilities and backgrounds are given the chance to fulfil their potential. This arts project is incredibly successful on many levels.
The young people on the project have for a variety of reasons lost faith and confidence in the education system. What we do here is allow young people to have fun. We don’t impose the usual rigid markers that are the framework of conventional education. We just let the people on this project get on with it and explore the various activities for themselves. We have people doing degrees this year, who previously felt they had no goals or access to any structured training that could get them into higher education. That is a success, but we also count the fact that people come here and want to be involved in these arts as a success. The young people have also staged exhibitions of their work at the project’s base in Portland Square, and have been involved in an exciting project with Terence to create an interactive corridor at the BRI.
